Abhyanga: The Benefits of Ayurvedic Oil Massage
Abhyanga, the daily warm oil massage, is one of the most nourishing practices in Ayurveda. Learn its benefits, which oil to use and how to do it yourself.
In Sanskrit the word sneha means both "oil" and "love". Abhyanga – warm oil massage – is exactly that: an act of deep nourishment for body and mind. The classical texts recommend it as part of the daily routine, describing how it slows ageing, strengthens the body and brings sound sleep.
Benefits of Abhyanga
- Nourishes and softens the skin and improves its tone
- Calms the nervous system and reduces stress
- Lubricates joints and eases stiffness
- Improves circulation and supports lymphatic drainage
- Promotes deeper, more restful sleep
- Grounds excess Vata – the dosha most associated with ageing
Choosing the Right Oil
- Vata: warm sesame oil or herbal oils such as Mahanarayan or Bala oil.
- Pitta: cooling coconut or sunflower oil, or Chandanadi (sandalwood) oil.
- Kapha: lighter, warming oils like mustard or sesame, used sparingly with brisk strokes.
How to Do Self-Abhyanga
- Warm about a quarter cup of oil by placing the bottle in hot water.
- Begin with the scalp, massaging oil into the crown with your fingertips.
- Massage the face and ears with gentle circular strokes.
- Use long strokes on the arms and legs and circular strokes on the joints.
- Massage the abdomen clockwise, following the direction of the large intestine.
- Finish with the feet, giving extra attention to the soles.
- Rest for 10–15 minutes, then take a warm shower.
Abhyanga as a Professional Therapy
At an Ayurvedic centre, Abhyanga is often given by two therapists working in synchrony with medicated oils chosen for your condition. It is also the preparatory step (Purvakarma) for Panchakarma, loosening toxins so they can be eliminated.
