Panchakarma is Ayurveda's deepest purification therapy. Learn the five karmas, the three phases of treatment and what to expect during a traditional detox.

Panchakarma is Ayurveda's primary purification and detoxification treatment. This ancient system means "five actions" in Sanskrit, referring to the five therapies used to release deep-seated toxins from the body and mind.

Unlike regular detox programmes, Panchakarma is tailored to your unique doshic constitution. By removing physical and emotional ama (toxins), it restores balance, strengthens immunity and promotes profound healing and rejuvenation.

The Five Core Therapies (Karmas)

The term comes from two Sanskrit words: Pancha (five) and Karma (action). These five therapeutic actions eliminate toxins from different parts of the body:

  • Vamana (therapeutic emesis): recommended for Kapha imbalances such as congestion and allergies.
  • Virechana (purgation therapy): pacifies Pitta and cleanses the small intestine, liver and gallbladder.
  • Basti (medicated enema): considered the mother of all Panchakarma treatments, it balances Vata and nourishes the colon.
  • Nasya (nasal administration): clears the head region, supporting relief from sinus congestion and headaches and enhancing mental clarity.
  • Raktamokshana (blood purification): traditionally used for certain skin and inflammatory conditions.
"Health is not merely the absence of disease, but the balance of energies within the body and harmony with the rhythms of nature."

The Three Phases of Treatment

A complete Panchakarma programme traditionally takes 21 to 28 days, though shorter programmes are adapted for modern schedules. It is divided into three phases:

  1. Purvakarma (preparation): internal and external oleation (Snehana) and herbal steam (Swedana) loosen toxins and move them towards the digestive tract.
  2. Pradhanakarma (main treatment): the selected karmas are given according to the physician's assessment.
  3. Paschatkarma (rebuilding): a specific diet and lifestyle rekindle the digestive fire (Agni) and rebuild the tissues (Dhatus).
Good to know: The rebuilding phase is just as important as the cleanse. Returning too quickly to heavy food or a hectic schedule can undo much of the benefit.

What to Expect

Before any detox begins, an Ayurvedic physician evaluates your constitution (Prakriti), current imbalance (Vikriti) and digestive strength to design a safe, personalised protocol. Days are calm and restful, with daily therapies, simple kitchari-style meals, gentle yoga and plenty of rest. Many guests describe feeling lighter, clearer and more energised by the end of their programme.
