Marma Points: The Vital Energy Points of Ayurveda

Marma points are junctions where body, mind and prana meet. Learn what they are, how Marma therapy works and a few points you can gently stimulate at home.

Long before acupressure became popular in the West, the ancient Ayurvedic surgeon Sushruta described 107 marma points – vital junctions where muscles, veins, ligaments, bones and joints meet. These points are considered meeting places of body and consciousness, where prana (life force) is especially concentrated.

What Is a Marma Point?

The word marma comes from the Sanskrit root "mri", meaning "to die", because injury to certain major points was considered dangerous. In therapy, however, the same points are touched gently to release blocked energy, relax tension and restore the flow of prana. Marma points range in size from half a finger-width to the width of a palm.

Benefits of Marma Therapy

  • Deep relaxation of the nervous system and relief from mental stress
  • Release of muscular tension and stiffness
  • Improved circulation and lymphatic flow
  • Support for digestion, sleep and emotional balance
  • A heightened sense of energy and inner awareness

How a Marma Session Works

A practitioner first assesses your constitution and current imbalance. Points are then stimulated with gentle circular pressure, often using warm herbal oils or essential oils chosen for your dosha. Treatment can be given as a stand-alone therapy or integrated into Abhyanga massage, yoga and pranayama.

Three Marma Points You Can Try at Home

  1. Sthapani – between the eyebrows. Gentle clockwise circles for one minute calm the mind and ease headaches.
  2. Talahridaya – the centre of the palm. Pressing here relaxes the whole body and is soothing for anxiety.
  3. Kshipra – between the thumb and index finger. Traditionally used to support breathing and energy.
Remember: Use light pressure, breathe slowly and never press on a point that is painful, swollen or injured. Marma work should always feel soothing.

Learning Marma Therapy

Marma is a subtle art that is best learned hands-on from an experienced teacher. Understanding the exact location, size and effect of each point – and how to adapt treatment for each dosha – turns simple touch into a powerful healing tool for yourself, your family and your clients.
