Every person is a unique blend of three doshas. Discover the qualities of Vata, Pitta and Kapha, how to recognise your constitution and keep it in balance.

According to Ayurveda, everything in nature is made of five elements – space, air, fire, water and earth. In the human body these combine into three functional energies called doshas: Vata, Pitta and Kapha. Each of us is born with a unique ratio of the three, known as our Prakriti or constitution.

Vata: The Energy of Movement

Made of air and space, Vata governs breathing, circulation, the nervous system and all movement in the body. Its qualities are light, dry, cold, mobile and irregular.

  • In balance: creative, enthusiastic, quick-thinking and adaptable.
  • Out of balance: anxiety, dry skin, constipation, bloating, poor sleep and fatigue.
  • Balance it with: warmth, routine, cooked foods, warm oil massage and rest.

Pitta: The Energy of Transformation

Made of fire and water, Pitta governs digestion, metabolism, body temperature and intelligence. Its qualities are hot, sharp, intense and slightly oily.

  • In balance: focused, confident, a natural leader with strong digestion.
  • Out of balance: irritability, acidity, skin rashes, inflammation and perfectionism.
  • Balance it with: cooling foods, time in nature, moderation and not skipping meals.

Kapha: The Energy of Structure

Made of earth and water, Kapha provides structure, lubrication, stability and immunity. Its qualities are heavy, slow, cool, oily and stable.

  • In balance: calm, loving, patient and physically strong.
  • Out of balance: weight gain, congestion, lethargy, attachment and low motivation.
  • Balance it with: regular exercise, light and spicy foods, early rising and variety.
Prakriti vs Vikriti: Your Prakriti is your natural constitution from birth. Your Vikriti is your current state of imbalance. Ayurvedic treatment aims to bring your Vikriti back towards your Prakriti.

How to Discover Your Dosha

Online questionnaires give a helpful first impression, but an accurate assessment comes from an Ayurvedic doctor using pulse diagnosis (Nadi Pariksha), observation and detailed questioning. Knowing your dosha helps you choose the right foods, exercise, daily routine and therapies – the foundation of a truly personalised path to health.
